My personal opinion: 

I have collected interview experiences from many freshers as well as from professional engineers. According to them, the interviewers ask us to design a simple and efficient algorithm for a given problem first and after that they say to write a code. So having strong knowledge of algorithm is necessary for every candidate. 

Algorithm is just like a plan which explains whatever your code is able to perform. This is the best chance to develop algorithm skill and land your dream job.
